Personal Reflection:

In general, how has Spanish 3 gone for you this year? (great opportunity to highlight the context of fully online!!)
Spanish 3 this year has gone pretty well for me. Most of the time I felt like it was a review for Spanish 2 but I enjoyed learning about the folklore of Spanish-speaking countries and the culture of Bolivia. My favorite times in class were the times we were exploring the culture. Whether that be las Cholitas from Bolivia or listening to La Libertad by Alvaro Soler, I really enjoyed not only learning Spanish but also the “experience” of the language. As for the fully online aspect, I will be one hundred percent honest that I rarely attended classes. I found that I could learn Spanish just as well asynchronously. I spent the time of Spanish class either taking concurrent enrollment at Fort Lewis College, working at a COVID testing facility, or working as a Pharmacy Tech. Although I did not attend class that often I feel like I learned a lot from Spanish 3 this year in terms of culture.

What were the most powerful lessons you learned?  (this could be regarding language, culture or about yourself)
I think the most powerful lesson I learned was the beauty of the culture surrounding the Spanish language. My mom’s side of the family all speaks Spanish and as my knowledge has grown I have learned a lot about my family from it. I remember talking with my mom after class about the Cucuy and she told me her story of my grandparents scaring her with the Cucuy. I had never known that before and it was a cool new way to connect with her.

What were your biggest challenges?  How did you (or did you not) overcome them?
My biggest challenge was attending class. I had a lot going on in my life with school, extracurriculars, works, and family that I had to make sacrifices in some of my classes. I choose to do Spanish asynchronously because I had Spanish support at home and it felt achievable while still creating room for me to grow.

What were your biggest successes?
I think my biggest success was keeping an open mind about online learning and adapting to the struggles it presented. Online learning was a lot more stressful than in person class. It felt very socially awkward because we never really got to be with our classmates. I think although it was challenging, I was able to learn a lot and adapt.

What are your personal short term and long term goals regarding language learning?

I would like to one day become fluent in Spanish but I truly think the only way that will happen is if I live in a Spanish speaking country. The only way to fully learn a language is to submerse yourself in it.
